Boston Radio Station Challenges Twitch Audience to Participate in Live Escape Room

A Boston radio station – WGBH – will host a Twitch live streaming event based on the escape game concept, with members of the viewing audience participating to help two teams navigate a space-themed escape room.

The event is a spearhead for WGBH’s ‘Emerging Platforms’ initiative titled, ‘Escape Lab’ – a strategy that hopes to engage younger audiences across various media platforms.

The Twitch audience will have an active role in the narrative, paying the part of ‘mission control’ that aims to instruct and guide four astronauts through the escape challenge. The astronauts are set to be played by members of the popular family YouTube channel, The Skorys.

The Twitch chat room will give viewers the chance to help or even hinder the astronaut’s progress through a voting system, as well as being able to participate in the puzzles.

Tony Starr, the WGBH social media director and Emerging Platforms team leader, said, “We’re not just asking for feedback, or asking for a response… the audience actually has a hand in the storyline and in the narrative.”

The Escape Lab initiative has other projects planned for this year and each will be ‘grounded in facts’ – according to Starr, who is keen for the audience to learn something new from each production.
