The UK’s first escape room to be played in complete darkness has opened in Canning Town, London.
The pop up escape room has opened in an old pub, The Durham Arms, and the premise is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK. Designed to be accessible to the blind and visually impaired – players must use all their senses to navigate the room and eventually escape.
The project came about after the Ministry of Start-ups green-lit the location to be used for the project.
Speaking of the idea for limited visibility escape rooms, Access Escape founder Hannah Hammond said, “I absolutely love escape rooms and just wished they were a bit more accessible so more people could do them and enjoy them as much as I do.”
The escape room officially opened on the 8th of August and has a witchcraft and wizardry theme. Expanding on this, Hammond said, “an evil wizard has stolen six dragon eggs and we’ve brought in your team to get them back for us before he gets back, within 60 minutes.”
The escape room will be open for up to six months at the Durham Arms. Hammond, who previously worked for a disability charity and has years of experience setting up events, is keen to set up even more escape rooms around London after the project is over.
