Lewisham Student Creates World’s Smallest Escape Room

24-year-old Lewisham student George Larkwright has created the world’s smallest escape room, which has been designed to fully test the resolve of any brave player looking for a unique challenge.

The game – titled ‘The Subject’ – has been devised to, “induce claustrophobia, desperation and dread”. We imagine this won’t be difficult given the small dimensions of the box, which measures just 120cm x 70cm x 50cm – beating the previous smallest escape room record.

Each participant will essentially be attempting to escape from a box the same size as a trunk or, more disturbingly, a small coffin.

The concept requires two players, with one being locked inside the box with nothing but a pencil, single sheet of paper, a torch and a series of cryptic messages and clues that have been written across the walls of the box.

The second player will take on the role of a special agent who has to help the ‘experiment subject’ escape.

Larkwright got the idea from Cold War CIA mind control programmes and has taken no shortcuts in making the game as stressful as possible.

Larkwright went on to say, "Escape rooms are an experience driven by social media for social media: the goal is now to get a 'we escaped' selfie at the end.”

"I want to strip users of their phones and lock them in a box with only a torch and their own ingenuity.”

"I don't want people to finish the game and be giggling and merry and ready for a selfie.”

"I want participants to emerge haggard, almost aged by the experience, but also triumphant, proud of navigating a game that is both physically and mentally taxing."

Sounds intense!
