Meet the First Student-Run Non-Profit Escape Room In the USA

Students at the University of North Carolina (UNC) have designed the first non-profit escape room in the United States.

Chapel Thrill Escapes started on the UNC campus in November and aims to give players a unique escape room experience that they can enjoy with friends, family members and other students.

Co-founder Cameron Champion said the UNC administrators positively received the idea, but doubts were cast on the project due to a lack of funding and the fact that those running the non-profit would still be full-time students with studies and classes to attend.

But the students were highly determined to get the project up and running, and were given a two-year, rent-free lease for the venue in a room inside student accommodation, Cobb Residence Hall.

The escape room team is comprised of students across a variety of disciplines that all manage the creative, marketing and physical creation of the room. The students themselves dealt with every aspect of the venue’s creation with no outside help.

Champion said, “Bringing al these people together is truly magical, we have a team of 20 people and no one has the same major – that’s kind of our secret sauce as to why our puzzles are so unique.”

The Chapel Thrill Escapes team has hopes of expanding in the future, but for now are focussed on creating a highly innovative experience for everyone on campus.
