School Uses Escape Room to Teach Math!

A school in Charleston, West Virginia, USA, has created its own escape room to help 4th and 5th graders learn math in a fun and exciting way.

Mrs. Humphreys of Shoals Elementary School, with the help of her students’ parents, designed the spooky-themed escape room called ‘The Pumpkin Patch’ using a darkened classroom, UV lights and highlighter pens.

She learned of the idea on Facebook and decided to put the room together after reading more about how beneficial the concept can be to learning. She decided that her students must complete a series of maths puzzles to escape!

Mrs. Humphreys, “Math is such an important part of their everyday lives that I want them to accept math and the challenge it presents.”

Her students responded brilliantly to the concept, 5th grader Grace said, “It’s hands-on and for me, when it’s hand-on, I can understand better and it’s fun and more understandable than usual math.”

Three classes participated in the game, with each class divided into six teams!
