Students at Clarksville Middle School in Clarksville, Tennessee, USA, have been using the escape room concept to learn about the Women’s Suffrage movement and the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote, which took place on the 16th January 1920.
Eighth grade US history teacher, Brandy Gearheart, said, “I want them to understand how far we’ve come in history and how hard people worked to get the voting rights they have now.”
In their groups, students had to work together to solve four separate puzzles by combining clues to come up with the lock codes and ‘escape’ before time expired – following the rules of the classic escape room concept.
The clues for the puzzles included matching key figures who fought for voting rights and what each of those people fought to achieve.
13-year-old student, Sierra Thornton, said, “There’s a lot of people who were helping during the Women’s suffrage movement. It’s said they had to fight to be able to have a say in anything.”
It must be said that the DIY escape game must have been quite a challenge, as not a single group was able to escape before the bell rang! However, the class kept all their clues and notes so they could continue where they left off for another day. They’re learning an important part of history after all!
