The problem with escape rooms is that once you’ve solved all the puzzles, found the hidden objects and deciphered every code – there is no challenge in playing the room a second time. Some escape room companies even ban players from attempting the same room more than once!
LA-based escape room company, ‘Hatch Escapes’, is aiming to solve this problem by creating a repeatable escape room called ‘The Ladder’, which plans to open in the spring of 2020.
The story behind ‘The Ladder’ revolves around a mysterious vitamin company called Nutricorp, and players must work their way up the corporate ladder – with each room representing a different decade from the 1950s through to the 1990s.
What makes this room repeatable is the incredible number of choices given to each player. Players are given the option to play different characters that have their own backstories, as well as the option to focus on puzzle solving or choosing to try and get the highest possible score in each decade.
One of the most crucial choices a player will have to make is whether they decide to play ethically or unethically.
Tommy Wallach, the co-founder of Hatch Escapes said, “The more ethically you play, the harder it becomes, and the more unethically you play, the easier it becomes.”
Each choice you make creates new branches within the existing narrative, with different ramifications for each choice. In total, there are 10 different endings based on your choices and the scores you achieve in each decade! Amazing, right?
There is still a lot of work to do for the game to run as smooth as possible, but it’s an interesting take on the classic escape game concept.
