Climate Change Escape Room Developed by College of Fine Arts

A theatre graduate student by the name of Chris Conrad is part of a College of Fine Arts interdepartmental project that has successfully built its own escape room.

The group is using climate change data from the University of Texas project titled: Planet Texas 2050 – which aims to develop programs to improve Texas’ infrastructure and durability against any unforeseen natural disaster.

In this particular escape room, the theme is obviously science related – as players assume the role of research scientists who have become trapped on an offshore platform and must escape the coming storm.

After pitching the idea to other faculty members at the theatre and dance school, Sven Ortel, a theatre professor, said, ‘A lot of our students, the design students, want to apply their skills outside of theatre,’

He continues, ‘They want to work in immersive experiences… any kind of experience where you basically follow a story or some sort of narrative.’

The project eventually turned into an effort involving four different collegiate departments. With so many people involved, Chris Conrad noted that communication between the various departments was crucial to the project’s success. Much like an escape room itself!
